It was founded in 1976, three years after the military coup, in order to contribute knowledge to public policies in Chile and Latin America and to collaborate in efforts to recover the country's democratic tradition.From its ranks have emerged the main architects of the strategy of economic growth with social equity and openness to world trade carried out in Chile since the return to democracy in 1990. In fact, four finance ministers were trained as researchers in this center of studies. In recent years CIEPLAN has worked with a new generation of researchers who have also come to occupy relevant positions within the public administration. Since its creation, CIEPLAN has been financed based on projects presented to multilateral organizations, agencies and foundations such as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), World Bank (WB), United Nations Program for Development (UNDP), European Union, International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP), Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), Carolina Foundation, International Development Research Center (IDRC), the Swedish Agency for Research Cooperation with Developing Countries) (SAREC), and currently through the Cieplan - University of Talca Program.

CIEPLAN is a study center with recognized influence in the discussion and generation of economic knowledge and in the design of public policies in Chile and Latin America. It works as a private non-profit organization with experts of the highest level and a network of researchers at national and international level . His research areas are mainly organized around the economic and social analysis of middle-income countries in Latin America . In this context, CIEPLAN makes proposals to discuss an inclusive growth and development agenda for the region with a long-term perspective in areas such as regional integration, productive diversification, technological innovation, strengthening of democratic institutions, free competition, market regulation and reduction of social inequalities , among many other issues.
